The first sea buckthorn cluster forum under the title "Mongolian sea buckthorn in the world market" was held on November 10, 2020

Since 2015, the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry have been successfully implementing the ProValue project to support the sea buckthorn value chain in Uvs aimag. The project aims to create new local jobs and additional income through increasing productivity and raising quality in sea buckthorn cultivation as well as through developing high-value products for end-consumers.

The EU-funded "Trade Related Assistance for Mongolia " (TRAM) project began in 2018 to diversify the Mongolian economy, strengthen the production of value-added non-mining products, support the export of Mongolian goods to international markets, and build the capacity of public and private sectors.

At the initiative of MNCCI these two projects are working on the foundation for strengthening export-oriented sea buckthorn clusters in Ulaanbaatar and Uvs aimags. It aims to further develop the sea buckthorn industry and introduce it to foreign consumers, and expand stakeholder cooperation for it.

More than 100 people attended the sea buckthorn cluster forum representing companies, state organizations as well as international development partners. They discussed the government's policy in the berries sector, the export status of sea buckthorn products and export possibilities of Mongolian sea buckthorn products to the EU.

Pure sea buckthorn wildcrafted from Uvs, Mongolia

The botanical name, Hippophae L. is derived from the Greek word “hippo,” meaning horse. It is believed to have been used to strengthen ancient Greek horses and restore their coats to a brilliant luster. All the way to Asia, Genghis Khan, regarded as one of the most famous conquerors of history, powered his army and their horses on sea buckthorn for stamina and recovery from battles. The strong history of sea buckthorn’s wonder lived on since in the country.

Of the 21 provinces (called aimags) in Mongolia, Uvs is regarded as the home of the best sea buckthorn in the country. High in the steppes at 936 meters (3,070 feet above sea level) grows a tiny but resilient fruit that resists high altitudes and the harsh weather conditions, with winter temperatures reaching up to -50 ºC and summer temperature of up to 40 ºC. The muddy iodine-rich soil fed by permafrost water also contributes to the unique qualities of Uvs sea buckthorn.
